Perusing the accessories sections of an REI or EMS can be like a kid in a candy store for an outdoors person. Wow… look at that avalanche beacon, or how about the latest Pure filtration system, or these new reflective stuff sacks. I want it all. And, after all, at our age, we’ve earned the right to buy a few “toys.”
But, if you have it all your day hike pack will resemble an Everest assent. Your long weekender pack shouldn’t weigh more than 25% – 30% of your body weight, so let’s not create a 50 pound day hiker. If you’ve read the 12 Essentials (link to 12 Essentials) you know the basics. And in reality, this really is all you need, but who wants to live on “needs alone?”
So let’s scan the isles and find a few goodies to add – weightlessly of course, the must haves.
For example, have you seen the Leatherman Tread Wearable Multitool? At only $165 you can wear 29 separate “tools” built into stainless steel links you wear as a bracelet. Here’s a peek inside:
• Includes seven types of screwdriver, five box wrenches, six hex drives and bottle opener.
• Also includes cutting hook, oxygen tank wrench, glass breaker, square drives and Sim card tool.
• Each link contains at least two tools.
• Adjustable to fit any wrist size.
• Travel-friendly, TSA-compliant design.
That may be a bit of overkill, and on the trail, trying to figure out which of the seven types of screwdriver you actually need may take more time and effort than you have. But. Look around, the range of specialty tools and gear is amazing, fun and really can add to your outdoor enjoyment.
